Have we gone too far with this teaching in our churches and is it even taught in the Bible anyway?
Yes it was being used in the 1st century church and yes it is being abused in the modern church.
I'm posting this because a dear christian friend of mine recently asked me if I would monitor his finances for him and mentor him in this area.I said 'No,because I can't even manage my own life without Christ. That if I try to manage anything on my own then I am a total failure.'
So how could I possibly manage anything of his? I told him that he needs to depend on Christ for this issue.
Discipleship is basically when you allow yourself to be put under the authority of someone else in the church to give you spiritual guidance for whatever reason. It could be for finances, marriage, sex addiction,or anything else.Or just to be mentored in all basic spiritual matters. One noted discipleship group is called the "Promise Keepers". Some people with addictions to internet porn, for example, will buddy up with someone in authority in the church and have them monitor all of their computer browsing habits with peer to peer software because of their weakness towards sex addiction.
We were born naked and we will die naked and we will stand before God at His throne one day naked and alone so we are called to only depend upon Christ alone for every need in our daily lives. Not a mentor or spiritual leader (disciple).
Be wary if you hear this message of discipleship in the church because in today's modern world discipleship simply does not mean what it use to in the 1st century church. It comes close but it is so easy for pride and abuse to take charge here. Now a days when someone has any authority over you it usually ends up with you putting money in their pocket in some form or them gaining some agenda over you.
This style of discipleship teaching is a new 20th century phenomenon really.
When you stop and think about it...If someone can't manage their own life without Christ then why would you let them be in charge of yours? And if they say that they are successful because they have allowed Christ to be in charge of their lives then they should lead you in that direction and be done with it.
Listen to what Jesus said in Matthew 23:8-10 :
"Don’t set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do... And don’t let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ."
